An update on the job search

So it's June 1st, and here we are -- already?  Damn, time sneaks up on me.

I've been sending out job applications for positions that seem to be up my alley, but it's been difficult.  With the work I've been doing, I end up being interested in positions that require many more years of experience than I have.  On the other hand, none of the jobs in the "fresh graduate" sections of monster.com.hk or jobsdb.com are interesting to me.  With my level of experience (or lack thereof), it seems to be really difficult to get an employer to pick up the phone and give me a call.  I've had a phone interview, but nothing came of it, and it was for a job that wasn't even based in Hong Kong.  It would have gotten me there eventually, but the position itself was in New York.  At any rate, I digress - bottom line here is that as of today, I've yet to land an interview with someone in Hong Kong.

I'm beginning to wonder if dad is right, and I'm just going to need to take the plunge and move back and look from there.  For sure, it'll lower a bunch of the barriers that I'm running into, and will allow me to at least get my foot in the door for an interview.  The prospect is a little scary though...

i think you will have better luck if you work through contacts.  that's how a lot of my other friends landed jobs in asia.

perhaps try asking your parents, aunts/uncles, and cousins if they have contacts or know of open positions?  if you have someone in a company actively pushing your resume, you'll probably have better luck.

why don't you tap some of the pennyo and penn contacts? ask them to give you some referrals or something. definitely agree with the comment above, particularly true in asia, guanxi and contacts work wonders
and to a certain degree agree with your dad as well. maybe you just need to move there first and start from there. it'd be much easier that way. you just need to have some savings to keep you fed and housed during that time.
i know people who moved back to asia (shanghai specifically) and eventually found job, and he doesnt' even speak chinese. at least you speak cantonese. i'm sure eventually you'll find something
